9 years ago. I am mapping out a massive USA Road Trip and had my route drive times on the website: roadtrippers.com. A couple times seems 'long' to me so I went to google maps & all times were significantly shorter (yippee!). Went to mapquest.com & times were similar to Google Maps BU each leg of trip was 15-30 minutes longer on mapquest.
MapQuest and Google are great for directions, and general basic information. However, for the most part, those given time estimates are based on point to point at the legal posted speed limit, under ideal conditions. There really is no hard and fast formula for converting those distances into real world drive times within the parks.
From Alpine turn right onto Hwy 26 West which will take you to Swan Valley and then right into Idaho Falls. This is the "least scary" of the two routes (the other choice being Hwy 22 from Jackson to Victor, ID and then Hwy 31 from Victor to Swan Valley). Neither route is particularly scary - but Hwy 22 to Victor is one heck of a steep mountain.

Hwy #40 and Hwy #22 are good roads. The drive from Canmore to Waterton takes about 4.5 hours, not counting stops. But I would hate to drive it without stops. There are some charming places to stop, both from a scenic point of view and from a local interest point of view.
If you're talking about taking the Kennedy (90/94) to the Skyway or the Indiana Tollway you don't need to do that. 290/294 to 80/94 will take you well around Chicago. If you want to try something really different run your route through Duluth MN and across WI and through the UP. Cross into Lower Michigan over the Mackinac Bridge and take 75/69 ...

The drive is very scenic. If you need conveniences, like shopping malls, chain restaurants, Target, etc. your LAST oppeotunity will be in Cleveland ...
