I think Priceline has gotten away from their original sales model. They used to mainly offer blind bidding for potential steep discounts. When I looked at Priceline recently for a car rental their prices were comparable to booking through any other third party or booking direct and most of the listings named the rental car company.

I've been asking the same question about car rentals and agree 100% to reserve now and cancel later if needed. The very best prices right now are on Payless. Sign up for their perks (as the Brit says) and you get a better deal. Then keep checking to make sure the price doesn't go down.
