    Google Maps lets you download the maps before hand. Just the turn by turn is a fairly small amount of data. If you're using Nokia Here offline you'd need to download the maps in advance so that's a wash. The gain with Nokia is it can do rerouting off line. OTOH I've seen some really strange routes with Here. I'm avoid using it now.

    Open the app. Go to the map area you want. In the search box type . okay map. That will allow you to download the map area. You need a connection to get the directions but that could be your hotel wifi. The amount of data for route connections etc is fairly small.

    IMO, "best" is driving the GTTSR in both directions - more time to enjoy the views, and it does look different going each way. You spend more time on the "drop-off" side driving west-to-east. There is one big switchback (at the Loop), so you start out from the west on the "inside" but switchback to being on the "outside" for the alpine portion.
