If travelling outside the state of the rental location, mileage is capped at 200 miles per day, 1400 miles per week and 2500 miles per rental. Additional miles will be charged at 0.20 usd per mile. I recently have been looking for a rental with unlimited miles myself. Some car rentals like avis and budget advertise unlimited miles, but read the fine print. They often limit the so called "unlimited miles" to only a handful of states, with a 25 - 35 cent/mile surcharge for any miles outside of those states.
Two years ago we put 1200 miles on in 6 days around Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. Last year it was 1200 again from Rapid City and Yellowstone. This year Rocky Mountain National Park and on to Moab to visit Arches/Canyonlands the first week in Sept. The car was rented through Priceline 3 months ago with unlimited mileage.
In my experiences with Alamo, "unlimited" means truly unlimited, and the car can be taken into Canada (with no additional charge or paperwork involved) provided it is finally returned to an Alamo depot in the USA. Most national car rental places allow unlimited miles, each franchise could put restrictions on it. the companies to look at are: Hertz, Avis, National , enterprise, Alamo, Dollar, thrifty,and budget. You need to talk to the individual places you are renting from to find out for sure.
