Re: USA - East to West Road Trip. 10 years ago. yes we would be flying back from the west coast to the UK. we were thinking possibly including Vegas, LA and ending up in San Fran to come home. so its finding places to stop in-between, were not really gambling people so we know 1/2 nights would suffice in Vegas.
If taking that route you could overnight in Charlottesville which I understand is also historic. Then from there head to Asheville, another great place to visit. From there head to I-95. You might want to visit some of these places on the way down and others on the way back. Possible take one route down and another route back.

Maybe look at replacing that with a route across Utah and Colorado, in that center section. Another option would be a sort of Route 66 trip, with say a divert round the Grand Canyon through southern Utah, or a dip into the Deep South, or a route through the South (Memphis, Nashville, Smokies, and up the East Coast, train from DC to NYC to finish.
