7. Re: Hotwire scam- avoid it!!! 4 years ago. Had a bad experience with Hotwire on Big Island, Hawaii. They understated the cost of a prepaid Thrifty car rental by 15 % (for a 12-day rental), which was the reason I chose them. Then Thrifty charged me that extra 15% ($132) and would not honor the Hotwire commitment.
Just found out HOTWIRE charged me $212.00 more than the current rate of renting directly from ALAMO Car Rental on my upcoming trip Dec 2013 to Sarasota, Fla. The non refundable , no cancel rate of $438.00 is nearly double the $256 direct rental rate of Alamo. Calls to customer service at Hotwire non productive.
Do not use hotwire, you will be locked in to the rental before you know who its thru. I just went to Florida and rented a car thru Hotwire who set up the rental with Thrifty, which you find out only after you accept and make payment. I'm going down for a week at the end of this month, and I want to get a cheap rental car. I usually use Hertz, but for some reason, their prices are inflated to over $500 for the week! Hotwire has some cheap options, but I don't know which rental car company it will be, and it is non-refundable, so I'm kind of nervous.
I booked a non-refundable rental car on hotwire around January 20th, 2020. I paid in advance and found out that my car rental place was Sixt car rental. I have been communicating with hotwire for the last 2 days to cancel and get my CC refunded based on the coronavirus world crisis. Jetblue gave me full credit for my non-refundable fare.
