They still have offices in many towns around the country with staff who are happy to discuss travel plans and offer advice, or just simply dig out the documents from drawers.

Actually, I believe any AAA (Autoclub of So Cal) has maps for free - of LA. You have to be a member to get maps of other regions. The navigation systems are actually very useful - and other tourists have reported back here that it was a lifesaver. There are locations all over LA - where are you staying?
