Trakl, make sure you understand how whatever program you use calculates driving times. Google Maps, for instance, uses the speed limits along the route it selects in its calculations. That means that it doesn't account for stops for fuel, food, rest breaks or sightseeing, nor does it account for delays for construction, traffic, or weather.

As far as I can tell, Waze, Google, Mapquest, and many others have eliminated the ability to map driving directions using the shortest driving miles rather than driving time. Since, I never drive fast and hate patronizing interstates as much as root canal surgery, is there any free way to determine the shortest driving miles for a roadtrip?

If you count travel days first and just see how many of those you need (estimating about 6 or 7 hours of travel for each driving day, so if Google tells you the total trip is going to take 28 hours of driving time, then you have to take 4 days out of the trip right off the top to do the driving), then figure out how many days you have left and ...

Re: Best Driving Route Cincinnati to Myrtle Beach. If taking I-75 south, I would take this route. Take I-75 South to exit 29 in Kentucky (Corbin/Barbourville exit). This exit will save you about 30 miles compared to staying on I-75 to Knoxville. At exit 29 take a left onto HWY 25E.

Yes, me too. Plus I also look at paper maps. You have to take Google maps with a grain of salt, though. Drive times assume driving at full highway speed w/o stops or slowdowns for anything. Most recommend adding 20 to 30% to the travel times shown. You can use the "options" menu to avoid toll roads, ferries, highways, etc.

It's not so much for driving directions (I'll have GPS) as it is for me to be able to get a sense of the whole route and how much time it will take to get from A to B to C to D to etc. Google Maps caps your number of destinations at 25. Routexl.com will let you add 250 stops (!!!) but you have to pay money to get access to more than . . . 25.
