"Google flights " seems very easy to use and I notice it gives me a choice of who to book through after I make my flight selection. One of the choices is the airline itself (in this case Delta).
11. Re: clarification about using Google flights. "Separate tickets booked together" is one of several ways Google Flights can display misleading results these days. It's always a red flag. Sometimes, as OP found, the individual "separate" tickets are not actually bookable on the airline websites at the listed prices.

Most airIine websites have a multiple city/destination option that allows you to pick a series of connected fIights. This can be used for open jaw itineraries, or for fIights where you intend to take a different form of transportation (cruise, train, etc) between two of the desinations.
Use Google solely as a search engine, then take the information and book directly with the airline. (If there are multiple airlines on the ticket then you may need to book with the airline by phone, or use a full service travel agent. But don't under any circumstances click through to a shonky third party booker).
