Though the 100-year-old Route 66 was ultimately bypassed by the modern interstate highways, you can still drive through it and visit the major cities and quaint towns along the way—including a few ghost towns.
There are also very good and free map apps like maps.me which allow you to download maps. These should provide you with detailed road maps. Both will work off-line (ie. No cell or wifi access) and will use your phone gps to find your location. However, if you need detailed trail maps or elevations etc, you will need to buy a proper paper map.
