If they have fewer cars sitting around- the price goes up. Your guess as to which applies to your dates and location. I have found, depending on the location, rates do often drop nearer the dates. But, other locations where they rent fewer cars- the price will only rise. I have no clue about the rental car market in San Juan.
Answer 11 of 14: I will be in southern California for a week in October - flying in/out of Ontario. I usually don't need to rent a car but this trip I will. I need a bottom-of-the-line, cheap car is all. I've never used the "name your own price"...
Hi half-Brit. I have used Priceline for car rental and just used the insurance provided by my credit card. I go to Hotwire and do a dummy booking. Then I take that rate and subtract about 15% to get the amount to bid on Priceline.

Last year I got a convertable for $19 a day through priceline, and right now I have a Jeep reserved for $33 a day but not through priceline. I may be checking priceline soon to see if the rentals have gone down a bit on the Jeep since my trip is only 1.5 weeks away.
I normally use name your own for small to midsize car and have been well served, but this time was a new experience. Avis was no help at all and said I could have a BMW X5 for twenty dollars more a day. I explained I did not want a sporty SUV, but a large car for slow comfortable transport of elderly a long distance. They could have cared less.
9 years ago. I have used name your own price several times successfully. There are a few items to consider: Take a moment to look at the map that shows the bidding area carefully. You need to be willing to accept any hotel of the specified star value within that area.
Ok, I have never used the Name Your Own Price feature on Priceline. I entered $20 a day for a 7 day rental on there and it took it. How does this whole thing work because I have a hard time believing that I can get a Minivan for 7 days with pick-up and drop-off at the airport for $20 a day with a bit of taxes and fees.
