After it was declared "Historical Route 66", the roads were paved and kept in better condition. So, old Route 66 is still there. Angel is one of the main inspirations for the Disney Cars movies. Disney/Pixar drove many miles of Route 66 for inspiration for the Cars movies. I agree though with others, I wouldn't drive it at night in Chicago. jc

It was cut up in 1957 and most parts east of the Rocky Mountains were cut up as State by-ways and replaced by interstate freeways. 66 was decommissioned in 1985 because there was no 66 anymore. In Illinois, route 66 is Interstate 55. If you want to travel the remainder of Rte 66 you have to go out to the West.
