I also suggest Hakone, which is quite a big area (a national park, in fact). Two charming villages right on the shore of Lake Ashi are Moto-Hakone and Hakone-Machi. My wife and went from Kyoto to Moto-Hakone, spent 3 nights there (and enjoyed a couple of splendid views of Mount Fuji) then headed for Tokyo. A great, very relaxing interim spot.
Planning a trip to Tokyo December 1-15, and wanted to add a 5 night stay in the Hokkaido area in btwn those dates to go skiing.
