Hertz Australia also told us that this type of behaviour is common in the US and passed us on to a customer complaint team. They closed the case without even speaking to us. We had to chase them to open it again. They been extremely blasé about the entire incident with an email showing the signed receipt (der!!!!) confirming "you paid, bad luck".
On a different note, I rented a Hertz for 3 weeks, had an issue and tried numerous ways to contact Hertz. Emails, Facebook, direct to rental/return locations, even phone (apart from the emergency number). Now a month later and STILL waiting to hear from Hertz. Hertz customer service is non-existent in Europe.

Avoid at all costs. Jan 2024 • Business. After 10+ years with President’s Circle status at Hertz, I’ve switched car rental companies after having to deal with the ATL airport Hertz every week for 6 months of business travel. Cars are never clean (always smell of weed, cigarettes, or like it was used as a bathroom).
With no further advice from the social media team, we reached out to Hertz customer service (customer-relations@hertz.com) requesting they confirm (per the social media team advice) that our contract would be honoured, and whether we would be notified the alternate location in advance.

Answer 11 of 19: I sent Hertz at Denver International Airport an e-mail inquiry about a charge that was added to my bill upon my returning it. To date - 2+ weeks later - I have not yet gotten a reply.
