Having said that, a credit card makes so much more sense for a car rental that if you can get one for this purpose you should. Reply.
I've heard these stories and have been in lines behind these people. You may want to consider getting a credit card, regardless of the interest rate, just to use for the rental car, and then pay it off and close it once it's done. No holds, and you get a limited amount of comprehensive insurance coverage just by using the card.
Here are the results: Dollar (RUDE) A deposit for the cost of the rental (which I already paid through expedia) plus 15% and a "debit card screening" which is a credit score check. Avis: $500 minimum deposit and a credit check. Thrifty (MORE RUDE): Deposit fo the cost of the rental plus up to an additional $250.00 and a "debit screening".
The top rated company, National, received 2.3 stars. That's not an awfully convincing measure of trust. And consider that six of the eight rental firms were each rated at less that two stars ...
It is usually a bad idea to use a debit card for car rental because of the hold that the rental car companies will put on your money. You can ask how much of a hold they'll require ahead of time but it is normal business practice for that to occur. Hotels will also place a hold on your money when using a debit card. Great post, but no one answered the original question. Does anyone have personal experience with a rental company that accepts debit cards. This is only one example, another example is someone who has bad credit or a bankruptcy and can't get a credit card but still needs to travel and rent a car and has a debit card and plenty of money on it.
