Great post, but no one answered the original question. Does anyone have personal experience with a rental company that accepts debit cards. This is only one example, another example is someone who has bad credit or a bankruptcy and can't get a credit card but still needs to travel and rent a car and has a debit card and plenty of money on it.
We just returned from Cabo and used our debit card with a Visa logo to rent our Avis car. If your card is from a major bank it should have the Visa or Mastercard logo and will be accepted by the rental companies. I've heard these stories and have been in lines behind these people. You may want to consider getting a credit card, regardless of the interest rate, just to use for the rental car, and then pay it off and close it once it's done. No holds, and you get a limited amount of comprehensive insurance coverage just by using the card.
Here are the results: Dollar (RUDE) A deposit for the cost of the rental (which I already paid through expedia) plus 15% and a "debit card screening" which is a credit score check. Avis: $500 minimum deposit and a credit check. Thrifty (MORE RUDE): Deposit fo the cost of the rental plus up to an additional $250.00 and a "debit screening".
