Or see if you can find a phone number for your hotel in Japan and use it (hope that they use email if they need to contact you).

Even if you reserve a table at the restaurant in person, they ask for a Japanese number. I just told them I don’t have one.

Personally, lately (these 2-3 years) I have used only VoIP apps such as LINE to contact with my colleague, friends, and even my mother.
