I hated the Hertz in Paris where I had to drive the car down a tiny ramp to the seventh sub-basement and slide the car into a microscopic stall, without anyone from the company inspecting the car for me!    That saves the NYC surcharge and the exorbitant NYS rental taxes. Stamford CT and New Haven CT have car rentals at the train station too. You can rent a car in downtown Boston, save the Boston Airport surcharge, return it in NYC and it works out very economically (sometimes). The trick is simply to avoid picking the car up in New York City.

What I don’t like about Hertz, they charge you each and every day of the rental, even if you never go through another toll. The max is $24 or so, but it’s just flat out wrong.
