As mentioned, at 2 or 3 in the morning the shuttles are probably less frequent but they constantly run so no reservation needed.

The major car rental agencies are off site and open late. My brother arrived after Midnight last fall and didn't have an issue. Procedure is you board a shuttle with the name of the car rental agency outside the terminal to get to the car rental off site location. There are 2 terminals in Detroit. a good hotel very close to the airport and has a shuttle every half hour. check in and check out is fast and good. room is big and decent. closeby you have a gas station and a convenience store. decent eateries nearby,especially the Beirut restaurant and giordino's is very good.breakfast is good and the area is well spread. overall recommended for families and business travelers alike.
the hotel was ok for the price. the staff was great and the location to the airport was good. the shuttle was on time, but the cars were not warmed up or close to the drop off location. when we found the cars we noticed that someone must have been playing bumper cars. damage to both cars was easy to see in the light. maybe thats why they parkedthem in the dark, hoping we would noe notice it.we ...
Rental car: I-94 east to I-375 into downtown. Public transportation from DTW to downtown exists, but is long and painful. Cabs are expensive. If you will be in town for several days you are much better off staying downtown than at the airport - not much to do there and a long way from anything.
