As mentioned, at 2 or 3 in the morning the shuttles are probably less frequent but they constantly run so no reservation needed.

   The major car rental agencies are off site and open late. My brother arrived after Midnight last fall and didn't have an issue. Procedure is you board a shuttle with the name of the car rental agency outside the terminal to get to the car rental off site location. There are 2 terminals in Detroit. Which airline are you flying?

The Regional Transit Authority of Southeast Michigan has announced plans for a bus between Detroit Metro and Downtown Detroit starting March 25. The shuttle service, called Detroit Air Xpress, will run 365 days a year with 16 round-trips between 3:30am and 11:00pm.
