Every carrier has dead zones in the Black Hills, since cell coverage is line-of-sight and very often a hill will come between you and a tower. Don't try to use your cell phone while moving as there is a high probability the signal will be lost at some point.

There are also very good and free map apps like maps.me which allow you to download maps. These should provide you with detailed road maps. Both will work off-line (ie. No cell or wifi access) and will use your phone gps to find your location. However, if you need detailed trail maps or elevations etc, you will need to buy a proper paper map.
