I made a reservation the previous day for Dollar car rental at DFW. I had a confirmation email receipt. I show up at 1am and wait in line 20 mins. I get to the counter and the rep working behind the desk acknowledges that I made a reservation, but because I made the reservation after 5pm he cannot honnor it and cannot give me a car as they are sold out with people who booked before 5pm.
Then there are extortionate airport service fees and other miscellaneous charges totalling another $160. To cap it all, the whole lot is taxed for another $50. In total, our $480 rental became $899. Absolutely unbelievable - never had anything like that in all the hundreds of cars I've rented around the world.
Re: Buyer beware: Dollar Rent-a-Car. You should probably avoid dollar rent a car ....i found a good deal on kayak.com, confirmed it at dollar.com...i would get a car for 4 days paying $124.88. The reservation confirmation explicitly says: "1 Weekend day at $80.00 per day. Unlimited kilometers. 4 Extra Days at $8.00 per day.".

Dollar is one of the largest rental car companies around, and I have rented from them in Vegas dozens (and I mean dozens) of times without any major incident.. When it is real busy, sometimes you have to wait for them to clean up a vehicle, but they will always honor a reservation even if they have to get a car from another company for you (as happened to me with Dollar in Reno last August).
