Normally, I look up the car price on Hotwire and then reduce it about 20-25% and bid on Priceline, eventually beating the Hotwire offer. This time, Hotwire was so cheap, I didn't even bother. Both Hotwire and Priceline use Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, Alamo, and Budget, as I have had cars from all of those.
This approach almost always works to get a much less expensive car. For example, on our most recent trip, the airport rental for a week with a full sized car was over $600. The location less than 2 miles away was $380 on the website. Calling directly to the location (not the 800 number) got it down to $290.
Many people on the Las Vegas forum swear by Priceline for car rentals. I assume Hotwire would be similar. Are you charged at the time you make your reservation? That would be a downside to me. If your flight is delayed or some other emergency happens you have already paid. Still, fo ra substantial savings I would try it.

On Oahu, it will probably be around $30. This is because they need to transport the car back to the original location.
You can also google in car rental coupon codes. Recently I was submitting prices almost daily on priceline, & they weren't accepting my offer. I found a coupon code online that I submitted thru a national car rental chain & got a lower price than the offer priceline refused! I also had the option of changing my reservation (or canceling).

My plane was scheduled to arrive around 7:00PM so I booked a car rental for 8:00pm. However, my plane arrived late and I did not get to the rental counter until a few minutes after midnight.
Taxi prices are not cheap! Based on the prices I saw listed, it would cost you more than $100 each way to go that far if you took a taxi. It cost us $25 to take a 15-minute drive from the Cancun hotel zone to Moon Palace, which is just outside Cancun. Renting a car is cheaper and gives you more freedom.
However, when the car rental rates that allowed cancellation were $50. per day and the Priceline rate was $17. per day the risk was worth it to me. That seems to be what most of us do with airline tickets. I paid $184.00 for my round trip airfare from MKE to TPA, but I could not cancel or make changes to the reservation.
