You have to forget the rates you used to see prior to this year. Rental car rates are up 40-50% in 3 years and you will be traveling in high season to a tourist destination. So, what used to be $70 is now up over $100. Be aware that gas is over $4.20 a gallon in northern AZ right now too.

Why are Rental Car prices so high? We know that everything is high in 2023 (fuel, food, housing, etc.), especially with inflation. It was around $500-700 a year ago, now it's more like $1200.

I've found that rental carprices drop closer to the rental date. For example, I was looking for a 3 day rental from DEN using Alamo. A few weeks ago the rental price was $50 a day. With taxes this would have been over $200. I booked the rental yesterday and got a rate of $38 a day for a full size carfor about $160.

Through Expedia; Enterprise is the cheapest with their compact cars, ranging from $382 to Avis’ $400 (which is what i was thinking about booking, the price through their company is $800 for the same amount of time), Budget seems the most expensive ranging from $500-$700, just through a third-party rental company.
