In fact, there is a minimum amount of liability coverage required by law, that the rental agency insist you have. If you don’t book it in advance, then you will be forced to buy it at the rental counter when you pick up the car.

You could take a look at info available on hertz.com and europcar.com for two examples of costs to increase coverage and reduce deductible. I've been looking at the same issue for a five-day rental on a Fiat 500x category vehicle where I am finding the cost to be just over 50 euro per day with basic coverage and approximately double that for coverage up to 200,000 euro.
