    If you have a 'local' Fiji number (via a free SIM card which you can pick up at the Vodafone shop at Nadi Airport) the cost of a text from Oz - to your Fiji number will be the same as if they are sending a txt to elsewhere in the world - am not familiar with Oz provider costs but from NZ it is 20cents - (17c for the text & 3c gst).

    This makes a difference. Your OZ phone should be unlocked. If using your OZ mobile in Fiji you will be faced with a huge global roaming account on returning home. I have always taken 2 phones to Fiji - NZ full contract global roaming and a cheap phone with a Fiji local number which is always kept active.
