If you have a 'local' Fiji number (via a free SIM card which you can pick up at the Vodafone shop at Nadi Airport) the cost of a text from Oz - to your Fiji number will be the same as if they are sending a txt to elsewhere in the world - am not familiar with Oz provider costs but from NZ it is 20cents - (17c for the text & 3c gst).
This makes a difference. Your OZ phone should be unlocked. If using your OZ mobile in Fiji you will be faced with a huge global roaming account on returning home. I have always taken 2 phones to Fiji - NZ full contract global roaming and a cheap phone with a Fiji local number which is always kept active.

Answer 1 of 2: Bula! Our cell phones are on a network (CDMA) that doesn't work in Fiji so we won't be able to use them. Thinking our best bet for calling back to the US might be an international phone card.
