If you go offsite, read the terms and conditions very, very clearly and bring any necessary documents with you so that they don't hit you with unexpected fees (notably insurance).
Good idea to use the pre-register, we booked our car too late (2 days before we flew due to the ash debacle) and had to wait 90 mins at Budget to pick up our car. The queues were massive and only 3 assistants manning the desk, in fact it took 3 hours from getting off the plane to exiting the airport!!!
