15 years ago. Beware "Pig In A Poke" bookings! I just got burned by Hotwire. I booked a hotel at LAX in order to get rest before an allnight trip. After booking I learned (as is their normal procedures) that I would be staying at the Holiday Inn LAX. That sounded fine to me until I called the hotel directly to make a routine inquirey.

Had a first (and last!) disaster experience trying out Hotwire for a last-minute hotel in Mexico (day before check in while in Playa del Carmen). I’m an experienced world travel (former guide and operations manager). I know there are risks to budget travel, but holy cow! I won’t be gambling on Hotwire again (despite any positive review).

But these supposed great deals are purchased sight-unseen - ostensibly because, "They don’t want people to know that some of their rooms are being booked for absurdly low prices. Everyone would want the same discount!" per the Hotwire FAQ - and when I locked in a commitment for a "4 Star Hotel in Valencia", what was revealed was in Valencia ...
At the time I booked, Hotwire was considerably cheaper than direct or through other OTA's. But over time, the prices started to drop via the other channels. If I would have waited to book about a week or two before my stay, I could have booked direct and secured a similar rate to the Hotwire rate that I reserved in advance.
