    4. Re: Car rental insurance scam? 6 years ago. In the uk they are obliged by law to have basic insurance cover and that is inlcuded in the cost you are quoted for hire of the car. However that basic insurance doesnt cover a lot of potential damage to the car and hence companies try to sell extra insurance on top.

    OK. Yes, by far the cheapest deal would always be adding on to existing insurance in place, held by a family member. If they're uncomfortable, clearly pressing them is not going to be a good idea if the worst happens, and things go pear shaped - even claiming for a small prang may be detrimental to family relationships, after all.
