I-35W is much nicer than the regular I-35 to the south. 281 will definitely add time, but it's a nicer drive, as long as you don't mind the stoplights and (as mentioned) the two-lane sections. US 67 is 4-lane and divided. You take that to Cleburne, then north on TX 174. To get to US 67, take the short-cut on TX 220 at Hico.

The Big Thicket area of east Texas is also worth a visit in my opinion. Hill Country, Ink's Lake and nearby caverns.

I suggest you go to Ft. Worth, then take US 377 to Granbury (off I20). Hwy 144 South from Granbury gets you into the countryside. Intersect US 67 on the east side of Glen Rose. Go West to Hwy 220, then South to Hico where you intersect Hwy 6. Make a right turn for four blocks to intersect US 281 and turn South.
The current structure was described as a "modern passenger and freight depot". The Ft. Worth and Rio Grande Railroad came to Granbury in 1887. To enable travelers to visit between Granbury and Ft. Worth, residents paid a railroad $25,000 to run a line between the two cities. This caused a growth spurt in Granbury and an economic boon.
