We then thought to just send an Amazon gift card but the Japanese Amazon site doesn’t seem to be working with our Canadian login and password. Amazon would definitely be easiest and most economical in terms of shipping costs. Any ideas? Do I have to create a new Japanese Amazon account (but then I wouldn’t have Prime for free shipping…).

I have exchanged currency already but thought I would send a VISA pre-paid--gift card with him in case he need more money. He does NOT have a reg credit card--only Japanese currency.

If their plan is to go only to Tokyo and Kyoto, a Japan Rail Pass might not be cost-effective; it depends on their schedule and what day ecursions they plan. But if they are going to do a lot of long-distance intercity travel, it would make sense.
