Crowds should not be bad other than on weekends and even then it is not that bad. I have done the zoo and Nature Museum in a leasurely afternoon with an 8 years old. If you leave by the north end of the zoo it is only a 10 minute walk. Free days are okay. MSI is huge so even if it has a lot of poeple there is enough room for everyone.
