   The reason for cheaper direct hotel booking vs. Priceline/Expedia/OTA is that instead of being frienemies, now hotels v OTA are outright enemies )). Hotels are much more aggressive now in trying to get you to book directly, so they don't have to pay 10-20% commission to Priceline et al.

   I've been looking for a hotel near Yosemite. Yesterday, I see the room I wanted on Priceline for $110..... about $40 per night less than what I had been seeing on the hotel website. I check the hotel website and see the room is not even showing available. Back to Priceline..... $40 over 3 nights is a $120 savings. The rate is non-refundable.

   I use Priceline frequently, for both hotels and car rentals.There are numerous "catches", but here are the 6 biggest - 1) payment in full is made at the time your bid is accepted, 2) said payment is non-refundable - even if you buy the insurance it only covers major catastrophes, a simple change in your plans won't get your money returned, 3) if you bid too low for a car and it is not accepted ...
