   " Car rental agencies haven't been taking debit cards for a long time, at least the major ones." Not true. Enterprise, National and Alamo all accept debit cards. Avis and Hertz claim to do so at some of their locations (Avis, confirmed as such for me in the above case but then refused to rent to me and provided no reason for the rejection).

   It is usually a bad idea to use a debit card for car rental because of the hold that the rental car companies will put on your money. You can ask how much of a hold they'll require ahead of time but it is normal business practice for that to occur. Hotels will also place a hold on your money when using a debit card.    Great post, but no one answered the original question. Does anyone have personal experience with a rental company that accepts debit cards. This is only one example, another example is someone who has bad credit or a bankruptcy and can't get a credit card but still needs to travel and rent a car and has a debit card and plenty of money on it.
