   2 reviews. 4 helpful votes. Avis Orlando Airport - debit card for hold. 8 years ago. I am hiring a full size car from Avis at Orlando Airport in a few weeks. It's all been paid through a travel agent. I dont have a credit card and my credit history isn't great due to a redundancy in 2013 so my chances of obtaining one are quite low.

The potential issue with using Debit is that any pre-authorisation ("hold") placed on your card is held against your money, rendering it inaccesible for any other purpose until it's cleared/settled. So your account has to contain enough to cover this pluds your actual spends.

   Here are the results: Dollar (RUDE) A deposit for the cost of the rental (which I already paid through expedia) plus 15% and a "debit card screening" which is a credit score check. Avis: $500 minimum deposit and a credit check. Thrifty (MORE RUDE): Deposit fo the cost of the rental plus up to an additional $250.00 and a "debit screening".

   O.K. lastly, We did NOT use a credit card. That was my biggest worry. We had a Debit card linked to our checking. I made hubby load extra $$ into it prior to trip because I wasn't sure how much the hold would be. I was expecting them to hold maybe $500.00. All they held was $125.00. So, yes, a debit card works!!!

If the person doesn't have a credit card already, or low credit rating, the type of credit card they get will come with an initial limit of £300-500. Likely maximum initial limit of £1,000. Don't really see that helping to be honest.

On pick up I'm assuming there will be a credit card deposit. does anyone know how much this deposit will be.
