What you can do is learn from your experience. If you are going to bid on Priceline or book a blind Hotwire Hotrate room you really need to research prices before booking. I think some people believe companies like Priceline and Hotwire are going to do the work for them, but they don't.
Recently I used Priceline to get quite a good price when I used Priceline without bidding - works like any other consolidator. Since the airlines have reduced capacity on all of the unprofitable routes, bidding on air fares has all but disappeared from reality! Priceline bidding is now excellent for rental cars and hotels.
