And when eating at a restaurant, you can only use up to 80% of the card's value towards the meal, but again, that's standard policy on most gift cards.

    2. Re: america express or VISA Gift Card. 15 years ago. I just looked on line and will purchase from AAA their travel visa card for my trip to Mexico. You can put any amount on it up to $10,000. It is too risky to use your credit card in Mexico these days at some of the restaurants. This is easier than travel checks.

    2. Re: American Express Gift Cards. Amex makes a card now that replaces the old travelers checks. They give you 2 cards. You loose first that is activated you call them toll free and the first is shut down and the second becomes active. You can't use the gift cards. We traveled extensively using the new Amex travelers card and loved it.

    I know that Visa/MC prepaid gift cards are only valid in the USA. I am 99% sure this is also true for Amex gift cards. You never want to use a prepaid gift card for things like car rentals, gas pump purchases, etc. - even in the US The per-authorization step will end up locking up funds, likely for 14+ days.
