    South to north. The views improve the farther north you go. Just so you know, Highway 1 starts in Orange County at Dana Point, not San Diego, does not follow the coast the entire way (it runs inland between the Gaviota Pass north of Santa Barbara and Pismo Beach), passes through some very crowded urban terrain in the LA area, and is only called the PCH between Dana Point and Pismo Beach.

You will never again see such scenery. Yes, there are some tight curves on part of this drive, but they are not dangerous.
