You will find it's much easier to take subways in Tokyo than in NYC. Each station in Tokyo is more developed than in NYC, so that you can easily transfer to another lines.
Note that the subway map also has the major train lines designated in grey underneath the colored subway routes. This gives you a sense of how the two are meshed together. The train map also has the subways meshed in also, but the subway map is much better to see how the two systems interact together.

Tokyo is the biggest city in the world, with millions of people a day riding the trains and there is no trash anywhere.
