    1. Re: Google Maps walking times. First, use the subway. If you choose to walk, I would add 10 minutes for short distances and 20+ minutes for long distances, just to be safe. Once you start to understand how long it takes you to walk from A to B across streets/avenues, then you can adjust.

    The best maps are the the 1:25000 OS maps. As above you can select them as a layer option in bing maps, at least in the UK in the desktop version. If not You can of course get paper ones, and there's a god phone app that you could get for one month. Public footpaths are red dotted lines on the 1:50k maps, but green on the 1:25 k ones.
