Maybe not in Toronto but in many European cities you'll notice Google gives walking directions that are very different then driving. They have to deal with pedestrian only zones and other short cuts.

It will not notify you if you walk off the path. No "recalculating" mode, you just walk off the map until you discover that you are going the wrong way.
