    +1 to Kaye’s suggestion. Rent the car at LGA or JFK, drive out the north shore of LI and take the ferry to CT. When we do it, we go to Orient Point, NY for the Ferry to New London, CT. It doesn’t shorten the time, but is a great break while still moving forward. New London and Mystic, CT are worth visiting n the way.

    4. Re: Suggest pick-up/drop-off points for car rental. 10 years ago. It is always more expensive to pickup at an airport location as you are hit with additional fees. It does not matter on dropoff. You are doing a one-way so you will be subject to one-way fees.

    Usually, dropping off a car just takes a matter of minutes. However, it all depends on how often Thrifty runs a shuttle to and from the airport terminal. The ride itself to the terminal should take less than 10 minutes. What can't be predicted is how long you would have to wait for the shuttle.
