   I often pick up a rental car there and drive south east from the city - I get on Route 1 through Alexandria and then pick up 495 (the beltway). It seems to work out well, even picking up or returning the car during commute times. The metro does involve escalators or elevators, but it isn't complicated.

The problem in dropping it off thr night before is many hotel don’t operate shuttles for flights pre 7am. Many national car rental companies allo early am drop car off and put keys in a box.

   I fly into DEN frequently and rent cars. My personal rule of thumb is hitting rental car lot 90 minutes before flight time. But I'm also very knowledgable of the airport, have TSA Pre, etc. If you are new to the airport, I would suggest you be at car rental absolutely no later than two hours before flight time. Good luck.
