Asda have very cheap mobile phones in most stores .These are not sold as disposable but may as well be. They claim not to lock there handsets so any 2g UK SIM (not 3 mobile) will slot into it. The phone will come with a uk SIM on Asda's own network . Asda's own service plan is relativity competitive.

I have a similar issue. My US phone is an elderly flip phone from TracFone. It is not possible to swap out the SIM for overseas use. As I will spend 6 weeks in the UK, I was planning to go to Carphone Warehouse and ask which inexpensive pay-as-you-go phone and plan would be best for my needs (texting and a few calls in the UK ... ability to call the US is a bonus but not required).

I have never had any problems with different iPhone models that I have used over the years in US & Canada. I am sure that Android phones depending on model would be similar.
