Answer 1 of 14: I just did my online check in for a United flight tomorrow night from NYC to Nova Scotia. The seat section was blank, and when I got the emailed copy of the boarding pass, under seat assignment it says "see agent".

Airlines esp st the airport where they’re not savvy with the reservations side of things can try to fob you off by mentioning various theories as to what happened to the previously booked seats.
There definitely seems to be some conflicting info regarding this. The website says: "United accepts one stroller or one carseat in addition to a customer's baggage allowance. When checked as baggage, all oversize and overweight charges will apply", which contradicts the Contract of Carriage info that you posted.
Calling the airline to confirm the reservation is 100% is not a bad thing. You cannot choose a seat and no one knows why. That isn't the end of the world. Stop calling the airline. Continue to check online. Best guess the air marshal is tentative and a number of first class seats are blocked. Leave well enough alone.

I booked a flight on Swiss Airlines (SFO - ZRH) through the United Airlines site simply because it was a direct flight and also the cheapest at the time.
This is from the UA website for Basic Economy Terms & Conditions. "Seat selection: Seats are automatically assigned prior to boarding and can't be changed. Customers traveling together, including families, will not be able to sit together. Advance seat assignments may be available for purchase during booking and up until check-in opens."
