I think Priceline has gotten away from their original sales model. They used to mainly offer blind bidding for potential steep discounts. When I looked at Priceline recently for a car rental their prices were comparable to booking through any other third party or booking direct and most of the listings named the rental car company.
With United Airlines, who use Priceline to give you these fabulous rental car deals, you get screwed if you need to change your reservations. In my experience, rental car companies have never made it difficult to cancel or change car reservations. Until now, with Priceline in charge. I rented a car for almost $400 and "saved" about $30.
