Well worth not dealing with the hassle. Did that while in Brazil for two weeks and again in Israel for two weeks, using lots of data both times (I also had a lot of rollover data to chew up 😁). I came across someone recently that used Skype - that was unusual. FB is also used by quite a few people I know, but they are often not Japanese people.

Whatsapp needs data to work. You can get the data using either mobile data (sim or esim) or Wi-Fi. If you have Wi-Fi in your house, just turn off your mobile data and try it out for yourself at home. SMS texting requires a cellular number (sim or esim) and is something completely different from WhatsApp. 10.
