In my experience they do not like accepting a debit card and you would be better to apply for a credit card as hotels also ask for one for anything you might purchase in the hotel. Last year a coup[le at Alamo were having a big row as they only had a debit card and the car hire people wanted a cash deposit of $ 1500 dollars as security.
