Re: Grocery Store around Airport or San Jose. 13 years ago. Yes, the grocery store is Mas X Menos in the Int'l Mall. I believe they close at midnight all evenings except Sunday (9 pm). They sell a wide variety of products (produce, dairy, meats, just as you would expect in a full service supermas) and including wine/beer/spirits/ice.

You won't find a lot of WalMarts in Costa Rica (thank God). The one by the airport does have groceries and it is about 1 km from the airport. However, it is not that easy to get there -- kind of a circuitous route and it is located on a boulevard so dealing with one-way issues can be annoying. Loads to choose from but in quality and most akin to high end supermarkets you may know the hands down winner is Automercado about 2km north of the center of Alajuela. Otherwise for an authentic feel to what Costa Rica WAS 100 years ago go to the central market, in where else, the center of Alajuela.
