1 year ago. Google maps cannot be downloaded outside of Japan. The reason for not being able to download offline maps of Japan on Google Maps is because Zenrin Co. (a Japanese mapping company) own the rights to the entire Japan cartographic area, and unlike most other countries, won't give it up to Google Maps for offline use.
6 years ago. Yes, Google Maps works perfectly here. Three things to make sure you have: 1 - A mount for the phone to attach to the dash or the air-vent (these can be bought quite cheaply) 2 - An Irish SIM card which you can put into your (unlocked) phone so you're no worried about data roaming.
A good gps will allow you to select between shortest, fastest route and some also have a time/distance routing which is a good compromise . However, Google Maps allows only to avoid tollroads, motorways and ferries. Also, unless you download the map in advance and use offline mode you could be up for some shocking mobile roaming charges.
